Hana Miletić: Soft Services
“Hana Miletić: Soft Services" is the first US solo exhibition of Hana Miletić.
Extending from Miletić's formal training as a photographer, the idiosyncratic shapes and color-schemes of the textiles are based on her snapshots of temporary repairs to buildings and objects in urban public spaces. Her meticulous and time-consuming use of hand work to document the ephemeral repairs reproduces this ethos of care and provides a slowness and material intimacy that Miletić found lacking in the medium of photography.
This interview with Hana Miletić, was conducted in conjunction with “Hana Miletić: Soft Services" installed at the List Visual Arts Center (April 4-August 4, 2024).

Oh man did I love this exhibition! I visited it a few months ago at the museum and will occasionally revisit the pictures I took of this beautiful art. The artist did so well captivating the isolate and often daunting presence of modern bureaucracy, specifically as observed in the immigration piece of this work. To think this same idea can also be explored within institutional architectures is even more clever and just spot on. It takes a talented and applied individual to have set this theme forth as well as she did. Also, I cannot express how much I loved the all-white theme. It made the subject feel all the more sterile and true. Great eye on the part of the curator as well!

Leo is a pioneer in the phenomenological aspects of environmental design. His installations remind me that there are higher forms of art that transcend the narratives on which so many artists rely to make some kind of statement. Hearing him speak on the subject of this Light Matrix is genuinely an inspiration. Merci, Monsieur Villareal.

As it turned out, Marker *was* misreading the situation, and rather drastically. It's unclear to me whether the art world (or worlds) are aware of their own inadequacy as reporters of the situation "on the ground" (so to speak.) This of course is a generalization, yet pronouncements like this (albeit private) communication from Mr. Marker to Mr. Chan need to be taken with a hearty dose of skepticism. To sum up-no matter their reputation within the art or academic spheres-artists and writers whose work deals with social critique, are oftentimes in no better position to accurately foretell trends of mass political movements, than is the man on the street. And sometimes not even *as* good at it.
